Ok, I got frustrated when trying to find a simple solution to this problem. It should open only the file you want and a second window will no longer appear. This may be little cumbersome way to open new instances of Excel every time.

Strange one I can't seem to figure out and tye down. We have a user that has been having problems with Excel spreadsheets particularly but sometimes Word. No idea what this could be. Tried: I have made sure they don't click twice... I have even done it myself and it happened. Saved a copy of the file as Excel Workbook. Could it be a profile thing? Or more likely bad file? Is it viable for you to try copying the data into a new spreadsheet and try to open it then? You could also try opening excel and then opening the document. It might be that the document itself thinks it is 2 documents for some weird reason. If neither of these work, do you have a machine with office 2010 on it to see if it works? JoshWheeler Worth a try copying the data into the new sheet I thought of aswell but the thing is it sometimes doesn't do it for days then randomly does it loads in one morning, today for instance. Hey that looks to me a simple matter as too much clicks to open a document. See if the user is having mouse issues, some mouse after some use tend to have issues with clicking, making people pressing more often on stuff for it to work, or is simply pressing too much on files, it used to happen to me alot, because laptop was slow, i click excel document it didnt open imediatly i would press again, causing it to open twice, one with document other without it. I assumed it may have been a generic problem. Finally i don't have that stupid problem no more Had the same problem, tried everything I could find on the net and still had it. It only happens when I open the first file in a folder, after I close that file and open another file in that folder or any sub folder it only opens one window! It was finally nailed down to the use of the 'Preview Pane' in Windows explorer. Anyone else see this as a common trait? If the preview pane is a must, you can right click and 'open' the document and not get the issue. Win 7 Pro 64 bit, Office 2007 didnt matter what SP Hi, I have just reinstalled to Office 2013 and this issue came up it also happened when I upgraded to 2010. I had a suspision that this is a Personal. Opened Visual Basic and copied all modules to a new file so I do not loose my babies. When the path was clear I tried to launch and no more two instances!!! Than I just recorded another macro saving it to Personal Macro Workbook which created a new one Personal. And when launching excel again it still flashes through like it is opening two files but it ends up with one file opened on the taskbar. Consequently when closing the file I only have to click once. If you are using Win 8, go to Explorer and click the View menu. Then change the Preview Pane option to something else. I rebuilt my personal. Next, I tried opening, and then saving personal. Finally, I opened the VB Editor, and copied all the Forms and Modules to a new workbook, and then saved that as the new personal macro file... This is on a windows-7 home premium OS. I suspect this approach will work for other version.

 


Works on office 2007, haven't tried in on 2003 but i assume it is possible. I notice that on the taskbar with Aero on if I hover over the Excel Icon - I can see all the current worksheets open. Ok, this will be slightly complicated. This will be seen as a temporary workaround only. You can repeat the above steps to open more Excel windows. Is there anyway to stop this extra workbook from opening i. Open Microsoft Excel 2010 and the first worksheet 2. DDE Click the OK button at the bottom of the dialogue box and you have multiple instances of XL or whatever, on multiple screens. Microsoft you never fail to disapoint, just sayin. Now you can move these two excel files separately across windows or monitors.
